PETALING JAYA: It was relief for shuttler Eogene Ewe (pic) after ending his wait for a senior men’s singles title in the Slovenian Open.

Eogene fought hard to beat South Korea’s Yoo Tae Bin 21-19, 12-21, 21-17 in an hour in Maribor on Sunday to clinch the International Series title.

Although it was only a lower tier event, the breakthrough was still memorable for the 20-year-old, who is currently ranked No. 113 in the world.

“This win is memorable for me as it’s my first title in a senior tournament. I wish more titles will follow this breakthrough,” said Eogene.

“I didn’t think too much and just played my best here. I would like to say that this is a good start for me but I still need to focus and prepare for my next tournaments.”

Eogene’s previous best results were reaching the semi-finals in the International Challenge tournaments in Vietnam and at home last year.

The youngster is looking to continue his good form when he competes next in the Austrian Open starting on Thursday.

Meanwhile, reigning Malaysia Games (Sukma) champion Wong Ling Ching also won her first senior international crown in the women’s singles by defeating Indonesia’s Deswanti Nurtertiati 21-16, 21-15.

The victory will come as a boost for Ling Ching after she initially decided to quit the sport and pursue her studies last November before reversing her decision and returning to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

The Sarawakian, who is currently ranked No. 100, will be eager to build on her encouraging showing and move up the ranks.

KUALA LUMPUR: Women’s doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah are out to keep letting their actions speak for themselves.

Pearly-Thinaah have been under scrutiny due to their ongoing contract standoff with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) but did not let the issue stop them from winning the Thailand Open.

The world No. 4 pair justified their top seed status in the tourney by overcoming South Korea’s Jeong Na-eun-Lee Yeon-woo in the final in Bangkok on Sunday.

Despite constant speculation regarding their future, Pearly-Thinaah are keen to continue blocking the external noise and keep proving themselves when they compete next in the Malaysian Masters which starts today at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

The pair were supposed to have final talks with BAM officials regarding their contracts which ended last December but discussions have been postponed for now as they are focusing on the tournament first.

Pearly-Thinaah declined to comment on their contract situation when speaking to reporters after a training session yesterday.

“We just want to focus on this tournament first. We are not letting anything distract us from playing here,” said Thinaah.

“We are very excited to compete in our home ground and we want to give our best in every match.”

Pearly said: “We are really happy with our title win but it’s already in the past and we are motivated to keep this momentum at home.

“As usual, we will take it one step at a time and not put undue pressure on ourselves.”

Pearly-Thinaah will open their campaign against Hong Kong’s Fan Ka Yan-Yau Mau Ying tomorrow.

The other women’s doubles pairs in action for Malaysia will be Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee, Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting, Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Yi and Amanda Yap-Ho Lo Ee.

Meanwhile, BAM secretary-general Kenny Goh confirmed Pearly-Thinaah have still not signed new contracts with the national body.

“We have not met them yet regarding their contracts as they only arrived in Malaysia late yesterday night after winning the Thailand Open,” said Kenny.

“We will definitely find the right time to meet them. We want to meet them as soon as possible.

“We are happy that they won the title. We want them to focus on the Malaysian Masters first.”

KUALA LUMPUR: New hairstyle for good luck.

Mixed doubles shuttler Shevon Lai Jemie has cut her hair short and hopes the new style will bring her good luck. Shevon will be attempting to defend her Malaysian Masters title with Goh Soon Huat in this year’s edition which gets under way today at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

“It’s not a new year yet, but I just felt like trying something different. I’ve had long hair for more than 10 years now, so I thought it was time for a change,” said Shevon after testing the courts with Soon Huat yesterday.

Shevon after her haircut.“Plus, the weather has been pretty hot lately, and it took a lot of effort to maintain the long hair. So, I decided to try something new.

“Like the Chinese believe, hopefully it helps get rid of all the bad luck and bring me good luck!

“I’m hoping this marks a fresh start and that we’ll have a good beginning here too,” added Shevon.

World No. 3 Soon Huat-Shevon are currently the top ranked mixed doubles pair in the country and are Malaysia’s best bet in the event to win the title again.

Last year, the husband and wife duo memorably beat Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas in the final to end the country’s six-year wait for a home champion.

Previously, Datuk Lee Chong Wei was the last Malaysian to win a title at home when he captured the men’s singles crown in the Malaysian Open in 2018 while mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing had been the last home winners in the Malaysian Masters when they triumphed in 2017.

While ending the drought remains one of Soon Huat-Shevon’s best moments in their careers, the pair believe that they will face a tougher task this time around to repeat their achievement.

The competition is set to be tougher due to the presence of China’s world No. 1 Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin and world No. 2 Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping this time.

Both pairs opted not to play in the tourney last year.

“Definitely, with the Chinese pairs playing this time, the level of the competition will be very high,” said Shevon.

“And it’s not just the top two but also several other Chinese pairs are there as well.

“China have always had a solid team with great depth, skill, and strategy. Keeping up with them is a huge challenge.”

Nevertheless, Soon Huat-Shevon remain motivated to try to capture their second title at home.

“Definitely, we’ll give it our very best and we really want to defend the title if possible,” said Shevon.

“But we’re taking it one game at a time. If we look too far ahead or set the bar too high too soon, it can create unnecessary pressure and nerves on court.

“So we’ll just focus on each match and see how things go.”

Soon Huat-Shevon will play Denmark’s world No. 21 Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch in the first round.

Meanwhile, Malaysia will also be represented in the mixed doubles by Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, Chen Tang Jie-Chan Wen Tse, Loo Bing Kun-Toh Ee Wei, Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien and Yap Roy King-Valeree Siow.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former men’s doubles champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik may be deprived of sleep but it’s not a problem.

Aaron-Wooi Yik showed their intent to capture back-to-back titles by turning up for a training session at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday despite only returning from Bangkok late, a day after capturing the Thailand Open.

Aaron-Wooi Yik were joined by women’s doubles champions Pearly Tan. M. Thinaah as both pairs brushed aside fatigue to test the courts before the Malaysian Masters starts today.

The world No. 5 pair defeated Denmark’s surprise finalists William Kryger-Christian Faust to win the Thailand tourney while Pearly-Thinaah beat South Korea’s Jeong Na-eun-Lee Yeon-woo to make it a memorable double for Malaysia.

“Our flight from Bangkok arrived at around midnight yesterday (Sunday). We did not have enough sleep but we already planned to train today to get some feel of the courts here,” said Aaron.

“We can still rest tomorrow (on Tuesday) as our first round match will only be on Wednesday.”

No home men’s pair have won the title since Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah triumphed in 2013 but expectations have increased on Aaron-Wooi Yik to go all the way and end the long wait after the duo also won the Asian Championships last month in Ningbo, China.

The duo are in confident mood but are taking a cautious approach.

“It feels great to be back here and of course we want to perform well but it’s not easy to win back-to-back titles,” said Wooi Yik.

“We know the fans here will expect us to win and we, ourselves hope to bring our best game on court.

“We want to enjoy our game. For us, it’s not just about winning or losing but our performance matters too.”

Aaron-Wooi Yik have a tricky opening round match against Taiwan’s world No.17 Wang Chi-lin-Chiu Hsiang-chieh.

Chi-lin-Hsiang-chieh underlined their threat when they won their first World Tour title at home in the Taiwan Open in Taipei two weeks ago.

Both Aaron-Wooi Yik and Taiwanese duo are evenly matched based on the head-to-head records where both pairs have beaten each other once.

“In men’s doubles, it’s always 50-50 and winning depends on performance on the day. We have some advantage due to our home crowd, so we want to use this as motivation,” said Wooi Yik.

“We have played the Taiwanese pair twice and it will not be easy this time. We have to be well prepared.”

Meanwhile, Malaysia will also be represented in the men’s doubles by Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi, Mohd Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian, Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong, Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing and Fazriq Razif-Bryan Jeremy Goonting.

KUALA LUMPUR: Women’s doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah’s future in the national team remains up in the air.

National No. 1 Pearly-Thinaah were supposed to have final talks on their contracts with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) after the Thailand Open but their victory in the tournament on Sunday (May 18) has delayed discussions.

They have no time to meet BAM officials for now as they are set to compete in the Malaysian Masters, which starts on Tuesday (May 20) at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

Pearly-Thinaah, who tested the courts on Monday (May 19), did not want to comment on their contract situation and instead said they wanted to focus solely on the home meet first.

“We just want to focus on this tournament. We are not letting anything distract us from playing here,” said Thinaah.

BAM secretary-general Kenny Goh confirmed Pearly-Thinaah have still not signed new contracts.

The world No. 4 pair’s BAM contract ended in December and there have been rumours that they are considering leaving the national body and turning independent.

“We have not met them yet regarding their contracts as they only arrived in Malaysia late Sunday night after winning the Thailand Open,” said Kenny.

“We will find the right time to meet them. We want to meet them as soon as possible.

“We are happy that they won the title. We want them to focus on the Malaysian Masters first,” he added.

“We are really happy with our title win, but it’s already in the past, and we are looking forward to playing on home ground,” said Pearly.

“We have lots of motivation and we want to play our best in every match.”

BANGKOK: World No. 2 Kunlavut Vitidsarn delivered a masterclass performance to subdue Denmark’s Anders Antonsen and capture the men’s singles title at the Toyota Thailand Open 2025 in front of a jubilant home crowd at the Nimibutr National Stadium on Sunday.

Despite holding a modest 1-6 head-to-head record against the two-time European champion, the 2023 world champion summoned a near-flawless blend of tactical shot selection, relentless attack, and remarkable court coverage to outclass world No. 3 Antonsen 21-16, 17-21, 21-9.

The energetic support from 3,000 passionate fans spurred him to his second Thailand Open title, the first coming two years ago at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium.

“This is beyond expectations—he was playing incredibly well in the semifinals. I didn’t think I was going to win; I just tried to give my all because so many fans came to support me. I’m really grateful,” said Kunlavut in a post-match interview.

“Looking at the previous results, I had lost to him most of the time. So I went into the court without pressure, trying to learn from him. Honestly, it was the fans who kept me going. If this were another tournament, I might have been done already,” added the Thai star.

Kunlavut has now won three titles in 2025, including the Indonesia Masters in January and the Asian Championships in China last month. With six BWF World Tour titles under his belt, he’s hungry for more.

“I want my fourth, fifth, and seventh titles to keep coming. There are still aspects of my game I need to improve if I want to win more,” he said. He now plans to take a one-week break before heading into the Super 750 and 1000 events in Singapore and Indonesia.

Kunlavut’s triumph brought some relief to Thai fans after hometown hope Pornpawee Chochuwong fell to Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei of China, 16-21, 12-21, in the women’s singles final.

In the other final matchups, Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik edged out Denmark’s William Kryger Boe and Christian Faust Kjaer in a gripping men’s doubles final, winning 22-20 21017 21-12, to claim their second title of the season. In the women’s doubles, Malaysian duo Pearly Tan and Thinnah Muralitharan held their nerve to overcome South Korea’s Jeong Na-eun and Lee Yeon-woo in straight games, prevailing 21-16, 21-17.

PETALING JAYA: Singles shuttlers Eogene Ewe and Wong Ling Ching celebrated double joy by capturing their first senior international titles at the Slovenian Open.

In the men’s singles, Eogene, who turned 20 in February, fought hard to defeat South Korea’s Yoo Tae Bin 21-19, 12-21, 21-17 in an hour in Maribor on Sunday (May 18).

The 21-year-old Ling Ching also celebrated after beating Indonesia’s Deswanti Nurtertiati 21-16, 21-15 in the women’s singles in the International Series event.

Despite being a lower-tier competition, the victories will boost both youngsters, who are eager to continue their good form at the Austrian Open starting on Thursday (May 22).

PETALING JAYA: It may be their first-ever meeting, but Leong Jun Hao is anticipating a fiery opening-round clash against Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen at the Malaysian Masters, and the encounter carries a personal backstory that adds extra motivation for the Malaysian.

Nguyen is coached by former national shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, who was once Jun Hao’s senior during their time in the national set-up.

The connection dates back to 2017, when Jun Hao faced Iskandar in the final of the Malaysia International Challenge. It was their only meeting on the international stage, with Jun Hao chasing his maiden senior title. However, Iskandar proved too strong and secured a 21-11, 21-13 win to deny the then 19-year-old a breakthrough victory.

Now Jun Hao has a chance to make up for that disappointment, this time by taking on Iskandar’s protege in the first round tomorrow.

The challenge, though, will be anything but easy. Nguyen arrives in Kuala Lumpur with momentum after pulling off a surprise win over 2021 World Championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen in the opening round of the Thailand Open last week.

“Looking at the draw, it seems like there is a chance, but it will not be as easy as it looks,” said Jun Hao.

“Nguyen just beat Lakshya, so I have to be better prepared for this match.”

Jun Hao has often shown his best form in team competitions, including during the recent Sudirman Cup in Xiamen two weeks ago. He hopes to bring that same level of intensity into individual tournaments like the Malaysia Masters.

“Maybe I need to approach BWF Tour events the same way I approach team events. It feels odd, but I have not figured out how to do it yet,” said Jun Hao, who is still recovering from a right arm injury.

“In team events, the pressure is higher, and maybe that is what helps me perform better.”

The 26-year-old will be aiming to carry that mindset as he begins his campaign on home soil.

PETALING JAYA: The best way to silence the critics is by winning a title – and that was exactly what women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah did when they captured the Thailand Open crown yesterday.

Pearly-Thinaah had been surrounded by speculation about their future, with talk of them leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to pursue a professional career.

There was also criticism from some quarters over the new salary package they had requested from BAM, which was said to be disproportionate to their achievements this year. Their closest result was finishing runners-up at the Indonesian Masters in January.

But the world No. 4 pair proved they have what it takes by overcoming Paris Olympic silver medallist Jeong Na-eun, who is now paired with Lee Yeon-woo, 21-16, 21-17.

This victory marked another milestone in their career as they became the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair to win the Thailand Open since the tournament began in 1984.

“I think it means a lot, to be honest, because we have not had a very good start, especially after losing in the first round at our home event, the Malaysian Open. But we never lost faith in each other.

“We kept supporting and pushing each other, both in training and during tournaments.

“Step by step, we managed to overcome a few things, although there are still many areas we need to improve.

“But today, I really want to thank my partner for staying strong until the end. This win definitely gives us something to build on moving forward,” said Thinaah in a post match interview with BWF.

Last year, when Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah clinched the Hong Kong Open title, they also made history as the first Malaysian women’s pair to win the tournament since its inception in 1982.

And when they triumphed at the French Open in 2022, they also became the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair to win that title.

Now, all eyes will be on them again this week as Pearly-Thinaah look to carry the same momentum into their home tournament when the Malaysian Masters begins on Tuesday.

They will open their campaign against Hong Kong’s Fan Ka Yan-Yau Mau Ying, with the tie marking the first meeting between the two pairs.

“I don’t think we have much time to celebrate because we are leaving tonight. So we will probably just have a good rest and a nice meal with the coaches and support staff who have been with us throughout the week, then prepare ourselves and start again from zero,” she added.
