Two-time Olympic medalist and former world champion PV Sindhu made a first-round exit from the ongoing Swiss Open badminton tournament on Wednesday, continuing her horror run on Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour this year. Sindhu, the world number 17, lost to world number 31 Julie Jakobsen 21-17, 21-19 in a 61-minute match, as per Olympics.com. With this loss, Sindhu has registered her third successive first-round exit during this year. She started the year by reaching the quarterfinals of the Indian Open, but could not make it past round one in the Indonesia Masters, All England Open and now the Swiss Open, which she won back in 2022.

Coming to the men’s singles competition, Kidambi Srikanth overcame a tough match against compatriot HS Prannoy during the opening round, beating him in a toughly-contested 23-21, 23-21.

Srikanth, who has dropped down to 49th place in the men’s singles world rankings, will be facing world number six of China, Li Shifeng in his round of 16 match.

Qualifier Sankar Subramanian, the world number 64, reached the second round in the men’s singles, defeating Magnus Johannesen with a dominant scoreline of 21-5, 21-16. Now, he will be facing Denmark’s world number two star, Anders Antonsen.

In the women’s singles, Anupama Upadhyaya and Isharani Baruah were among the progressing players, with Anumpama defeating rising Indian star nmol Kharb 21-14, 21-13 before Isharani Baruah went past Aakarshi Kashyap by a 21-18, 17-21, 20-22.

The rest of the Indian badminton players, including Malvika Bansod, Kiran George and Ayush Shetty, could not make it past the first round.

The two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will spearhead the Indian challenge at the Swiss Open badminton tournament, starting from Tuesday at St Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland. Swiss Open, a Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super 300 tournament, will witness world number 16 Sindhu, also the 2022 Swiss Open winner, in action against compatriot and world number 28 Malvika Bansod in the women’s singles first-round clash, an all-Indian affair, as per Olympics.com. The other women’s singles players in the draw from India are, Anupama Upadhyaya, Aakarshi Kashyap, and Rakshitha Ramraj

Coming to the men’s singles competition, there is another all-Indian clash on the card in the first round. The world number 15 Lakshya Sen, India’s best-ranked shuttler, will take on 2016 Swiss Open winner HS Prannoy.

Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George are also a part of the men’s singles draw for India. No entries from India are there in the men’s doubles category.

The world number nine Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will compete in the women’s doubles competition. Other Indian women’s doubles competitors are the pairs of Priya Konjengbam-Shruti Mishra and Varshini Viswanath Sri-Arathi Sara Sunil.

The mixed doubles pairs from India, Ashith Surya-Amrutha Pramuthesh and Sathish Karunakaran-Aadya Variyath, are also a part of the main draw.

In the men’s and women’s singles, the top seeds are China’s Shi Yu Qi and Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong.

Star shuttlers PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen will continue their quest to regain top form when the USD 250,000 Swiss Open gets underway in Basel on Tuesday, featuring draws that are crowded with Indians. Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu, who is seeded seventh, will take on Malvika Bansod, India’s number-two female shuttler, in a clash between two generations. Lakshya will also face a compatriot in HS Prannoy, who is a 2016 winner here, in his men’s singles opening match of the BWF Super 300 tournament.

Sindhu, the 2022 champion, suffered an opening round exit from the All England Championship last week after returning to action following a hamstring injury. Malvika, however, logged a confidence-boosting win over Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min at the same event.

Lakshya and Prannoy too endured contrasting results in Birmingham last week with the former reaching the quarterfinals and the latter going down in the opening round.

The Indian shuttlers have a formidable record at the Swiss Open. Past champions include Sindhu, K Srikanth, Prannoy, Sameer Verma, Saina Nehwal, and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

This will be the first encounter between Lakshya and Prannoy, who were a part of the 2022 Thomas Cup-winning team, since the Paris Olympics.

Lakshya, who finished fourth at the Paris Olympics, defeated Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie last week, while Prannoy, having returned from a long lay-off due to chikungunya, has struggled with early exits since his comeback.

Among others, Aakarshi Kashyap and Anupama Upadhyaya will also aim for a decent run in women’s singles.

While Kashyap is facing a qualifier, Upadhyaya will take on Denmark’s Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt.

Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj will meet another Danish player, Line Christophersen, in her opening match.

In men’s singles, Kiran George, who made waves by reaching the quarterfinals at the India Open Super 750, will look to live up to his potential when he faces Denmark’s tricky Rasmus Gemke.

Priyanshu Rajawat will take on Switzerland’s Tobias Kuenzi.

After a quarterfinal finish at the All England Championship, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, seeded fourth here, will square off against Aline Muller and Kelly Van Buiten in their opening match.

Other Indian women’s pairs in fray include Priya Konjengbam/Shruti Mishra and Arathi Sara Sunil/Varshini Viswanath Sri.

National Games gold-medallists Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath will square off against Koceila Mammeri and Tanina Violette Mammeri in mixed doubles.

In the men’s singles qualifiers, five Indians — 2015 champion Kidambi Srikanth, Ayush Shetty, Tharun Mannepalli, S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, and Sathish — will compete.

Isharani Baruah, Tasnim Mir, and Anmol Kharb will battle it out in the women’s singles qualification.

India’s Lakshya Sen bowed out of the All England Badminton Championships and so did the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand after losing their respective quarterfinal matches in Birmingham on Friday. Sen exited after a straight-game loss to Chinese world No. 6 Li Shi Feng in the men’s singles quarterfinal. The 2022 finalist, who had narrowly lost a Paris Olympic medal last year, was outplayed 10-21, 16-21 in a 45-minute contest. Then, the duo of Treesa and Gayatri went down to Chinese second seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning 14-21 10-21 in a match lasting 46 minutes.

Treesa and Gayatri failed to recreate their outstanding performance in their round-of-16 victory against South Korea’s Kim Hye Jeong and Kong Hee Yong on Thursday.

The Indians started on a bright note but once the formidable Chinese pair, perhaps the best in the world at the moment, found their footing, there was no stopping them as they tackled everything their opponents threw at them to emerge winners in straight games.

With this result, India’s challenge at the prestigious tournament has also come to an end.

Earlier Sen, ranked world No. 15, and who had won his last two matches against Li, including at the Thomas Cup, on the day struggled against his familiar Chinese opponent from the junior class of 2018.

Feng stamped his authority early, winning the first game in just 17 minutes.

He played composed badminton, avoiding unnecessary risks. A powerful smash gave him a 9-4 lead, and he entered the break with a solid 11-4 advantage.

Sen’s unsuccessful review left him trailing 4-12, but he briefly upped his attack, reducing the gap to 7-12 with a sharp cross-court smash.

However, Feng adjusted quickly, mixing up his pace and tactics effectively.

A precise review put him ahead 19-10 before unforced errors from Sen handed Feng the game.

Sen showed signs of improvement in the second game, but Feng remained dominant, sealing the issue in 27 minutes.

Sen trailed 2-5 but clawed back with better net play, edging ahead 10-8 after a gruelling 37-shot rally.

He took a slender three-point lead at the break and kept pace in a tight battle, with a marathon 44-shot exchange locking it at 14-all.

However, the tall Feng upped his aggression, moving ahead 17-15 with a powerful smash.

At 15-18, Sen suffered some finger bruises, spilling blood on the court and requiring medical attention and the court had to be cleaned.

The brief stoppage, however, did little to halt Feng’s momentum, as he powered through with another thundering smash to close out the match.

Despite the loss, it was a solid campaign for Sen, who had earlier stunned defending champion Jonatan Christie in straight games, avenging his semifinal defeat to the Indonesian last year.

With this result, Feng advanced to the semifinals, where he will face the winner of the match between top seed Shi Yu Qi and Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew.

India’s campaign in other categories ended in the second round of the world’s oldest Super 1000 tournament that carries a prize purse of USD 1.45 million.

On Thursday, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty pulled out in men’s doubles after an injury, Malvika Bansod exited in women’s singles, and the mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde also fell short.

Lakshya Sen delivered a clinical performance to enter the quarterfinals of the All-England Open Badminton Championships, securing a dominant straight-game win over Indonesia’s Jonathan Christie (21-13, 21-10) in Birmingham on Thursday. The Indian shuttler, known for his swift footwork and precise shot-making, dismantled the world No. 4 in just 36 minutes, keeping India’s hopes alive in the prestigious tournament. Sen, who reached the All-England final in 2022, looked in complete control from the start, using his aggressive play and sharp net game to unsettle Christie. The 22-year-old Indian dictated the pace of the match, taking an early lead and maintaining his advantage throughout.

Yamaguchi has now extended her head-to-head record against Malvika to 4-0. Earlier on Wednesday, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu crashed out of the women’s singles event.

Against Yamaguchi, Malvika struggled to adjust to the conditions, repeatedly hitting wide, long, and into the net to fall behind early.

Despite a few unforced errors of her own, Yamaguchi seized the advantage at the mid-game interval with a deft drop shot followed by an accurate placement.

The Indian shuttler managed to stay within striking distance till 13-15, but Yamaguchi soon surged ahead, earning a slew of game points before sealing the opening game as Malvika sent another shot wide.

The Japanese started the second game strongly, taking a 3-1 lead but Malvika fought back to level scores at 5-5 and later 8-8. However, her inconsistency returned, allowing Yamaguchi to go into the interval with a comfortable lead.

There was little resistance from Malvika after the change of ends, as Yamaguchi raced ahead, earning eight match points. She closed out the contest with a smash on her second opportunity.

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the second round of the men’s doubles competition at the All England Championships, registering a straight-game victory over Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard. Returning to the court after his father’s loss last month, Satwik, along with his doubles partner Chirag, put on an impressive display, securing a 21-17, 21-15 win in just 40 minutes late Wednesday. Moments after sealing the victory, Satwik raised his finger to the sky, his gaze fixed skyward — perhaps reaching out to his father, searching for him in the beyond.

“It’s tough, but that’s how life is,” said Satwik. “It wasn’t expected.” The 24-year-old from Amalapuram expressed his gratitude to his partner for being there during this challenging time.

“During hard times he (Shetty) came to my home town, we practised there a bit, and for that I’m thankful. He was there during my injury; his parents came down and our coach also came down to my home town.

“My father always wanted to bring them there.” Reflecting on the sudden turn of events in the past fortnight, Chirag said: “Credit to Satwik, what he’s gone through and how he’s come back and decided to play here, nobody could do that.

“Kudos to him, he’s a strong-willed person to come out of it, and keep it all aside, because that’s what his dad would’ve wanted him to do. I’m proud to be his partner.” The duo, seeded 7th, will next take on China’s Hao Nan Xie and Wei Han Zeng in the round of 16 on Thursday.

In other matches involving Indian players, Lakshya Sen will face Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie, while Malvika Bansod takes on Japan’s third seed Akane Yamaguchi, a two-time World Champion.

Malvika had earlier stunned Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min in her debut match at the prestigious tournament.

World No. 9 Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who reached back-to-back semifinals at this event, will meet the eighth-seeded Korean pair of Hye Jeong Kim and Hee Yong Kong.

India’s Lakshya Sen fought his way back to reach the second round of the All England Championships on Tuesday, while compatriot HS Prannoy was eliminated in the opening round of the men’s singles competition here. Lakshya, ranked 15th in the world, came from behind to defeat Chinese Taipei’s world No. 37, SU Li Yang, with a 13-21, 21-17, 21-15 win in the opening round of the Super 1000 event. The 23-year-old from Almora will face Indonesia’s third seed Jonatan Christie next. Lakshya had defeated Christie en route to his fourth place finish at the Paris Olympics last year.

India’s HS Prannoy bowed out of the All England Championships on Tuesday, suffering a straight-game defeat to France’s Toma Junior Popov in the men’s singles opening round. On a comeback trail, Prannoy, a bronze medallist at the 2023 World Championships and Asian Games, fought for 53 minutes before going down 19-21, 16-21 to Popov, who is currently ranked 17th in the world. The 32-year-old, ranked 29th, had his chances in the opening game, leading 6-1 and 15-12, but faltered in the face of the relentless pressure of Popov, who turned the game around from 16-18 to 19-18 before taking the lead.

Popov grew in confidence after the change of ends, moving from 5-3 to 13-9. Prannoy fought back to level at 13-13, but Popov surged ahead as the Indian crumbled.

After losing the first game, Lakshya and Yang battled fiercely till 17-17 in the second game, with the Indian taking advantage of three errors from Yang at the net to register four straight points and roar back into the contest.

In the decider, Lakshya led 11-9 at the interval, and though Yang drew level at 15-15, Lakshya finished strong, winning the last six points with a body blow, two powerful returns, and a few more mistakes from Yang.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and former world no.1 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will start their campaign on Wednesday.

Indian badminton biggest names—Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty and Lakshya Sen–suffered a significant blow, falling out of the top 10 in their respective categories in the latest world rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday. Former world No.1 men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have dropped five places in the rankings to 12th. The duo, who were ranked seventh last week, last competed at the Badminton Asia Team Mixed Championships in February. This marks the first time since November 2021 that the pair has fallen outside the top 10, reflecting a turbulent period in their career following their underwhelming performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Since their Olympic exit, Rankireddy and Shetty have undergone a series of changes in their training setup, including parting ways with their long-time coach, Mathias Boe. They are now being mentored by Tan Kim Her, the coach credited with forming their partnership in their early days. Despite the setback, they remain India’s highest-ranked men’s doubles pair.

In the men’s singles, Lakshya Sen has also suffered a ranking decline. The former world No. 10 has slipped five places to 15th in the latest standings. Much like Rankireddy and Shetty, Sen last competed at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships and has struggled for form in 2025.

His early exits at the Malaysia Open and India Open have contributed to his slide in the rankings. His best performance so far this year has been reaching the Round of 16 at the Indonesia Masters Super 500 event.

In women’s singles, PV Sindhu, India’s double Olympic medallist, has also seen a dip in her ranking. She has slipped to the 16th position from 15th last week. Despite the setback, Sindhu remains the only Indian in the top 20 of the women’s singles rankings.

While most Indian shuttlers struggled in the rankings, there were a few bright spots. The women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand continues to hold firm in the top 10, occupying the ninth spot in the world rankings. The duo remains India’s best bet in women’s doubles and will look to build on their steady performances.

Meanwhile, in mixed doubles, the pairing of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila achieved a career-high ranking of 19th. Crasto’s feat is particularly noteworthy as she has now broken into the Top 20 of the world rankings with three different partners. Previously, she had achieved this distinction with Ashwini Ponnappa in the women’s doubles and Ishaan Bhatnagar in mixed doubles.

Among the young talents making a mark, Ayush Shetty had a breakthrough week, climbing to a career-best ranking of 43rd in men’s singles after his impressive semi-final run at the Orleans Masters.

The young shuttler has moved up five places and is now the fifth-highest-ranked Indian in men’s singles, trailing behind Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Priyanshu Rajawat, and Kiran George.
